Zach on Leadership: The First Year
Today marks the one year anniversary of Zach on Leadership. I’d like to thank all of my readers for engaging with me, encouraging me, and spreading the word. This started off as a wild experiment, and has now become an important part of how I communicate my ideas and influence the greater IT community.
I’d like to briefly revisit the mission for this blog. My tag line in my logo says it all: “Better Leaders in Enterprise Technology.” Enterprise Technology is a tough business. It’s the center of disruptive change, competitive advantage, political tension, and operational viability. That’s the field we all chose. This field puts our leadership ability to the test day after day. Yet, there is so much room for improvement.
What enterprise technology needs is better leaders. I’m not making that statement as an expert speaking to those that need to learn. I’m making that statement as a learner myself. I’m a learner and a practitioner. I write this blog to my colleagues about what I’m learning at the moment, sharing my insights as I struggle to put them into practice every day.
This is a community of technology leaders learning from each other how best to serve our teams, collaborate with each other, and serve the businesses that depend on us.
I set out to write this weekly blog for a year and not concern myself with the results. Some articles have been better than others. Some have been widely read, and others have been hardly noticed. Even though I’ve been at it for a year, my mouse cursor still hovers over the “publish” button in hesitation each week. Putting all of this “out there” isn’t easy, but it’s a good discipline.
Doing hard things makes us stronger. Whether it’s blogging or something else, I hope this article encourages you to do the hard thing that you know will stretch you. No one is asking you to do it, but you know in your gut that you should. Go for it. Make it happen.
So, what does the future hold for Zach on Leadership? Perhaps one day, by some miracle of social media, one of my articles will “go viral.” Or perhaps not. That’s ok too. One thing is for sure: I’m not ready to hang it up yet. I have more ideas to share, more stories to tell, and more movies to analogize. Thank you for joining me on this journey and cheering me on. You are my inspiration.
